Why Your Back Pain May Signal the Need for Spine Surgery

About Me
How a Neurologist Helped Me

Hey! This blog is dedicated to all of the neurologist out there who work so hard to help their patients overcome their illnesses. I'm Dave and last year, I began to get very bad cluster headaches. They would occur suddenly and I would have to take to my bed for several days. I was becoming really upset by them. I went to see my GP and he recommended that I see a neurologist who carried out some tests and provided me with some medication. I am now doing much better than I was and I hope to manage and control my condition.

Why Your Back Pain May Signal the Need for Spine Surgery

Back pain is something many people deal with on a daily basis. This can be due to overworking the spinal area. It can also be short term back pain from lifting too many items, increasing your workout or simply from sleeping wrong. When this back pain becomes chronic and begins affecting your daily life, you may need spine surgery to reduce the pain. Here are some signs your back pain needs medical intervention and possible surgery.

Sciatica

If you are experiencing nerve pain when you sit or change positions, you may be experiencing issues with your sciatica. This pain starts in your lower back. As it becomes worse, you may notice the pain moving down your leg. This type of pain can make you unable to move. It can also spread severe pain in your lower body. When this happens your doctor may begin looking at sciatica as the issue. If treatments are not working, spine surgery is the next step to alleviate the pressure on the nerve and help reduce your pain.

Infections

Different infections can cause severe inflammation throughout the body. Unfortunately, when inflammation hits the back area, it can cause pressure on the spine. This pressure may not go down as easily as inflammation in other parts of the body do. This means you are left with pressure between the vertebrae of your spine and other areas surrounding your back. The infection may also remain in certain areas. This can lead to ongoing issues and chronic pain from the pressure. This type of issue may need spine surgery to help all aspects of the issue and remove the infection from your back.

Pinched Nerves

A common issue many people have in relation to back pain is pinched nerves. Pinched nerves are brought on by several issues, including inflammation and pressure. For example, if you are sitting for most of your day, neck pain can set in. If the neck pain continues, it can lead to nerve issues. The posture from sitting all day can also lead to compression of the spine. The nerve issues combined with compression lead to severe pain in the back. Spine surgery may be an option in these cases.

These are just a few of the ways that back pain can lead to spine surgery. If you are experiencing more frequent issues with your back and related pain, contact your physician. They can refer you to a back specialist. A referral can begin the process towards the spine surgery you need and to alleviate your pain.
